Mats form close to the skin, which makes it easy to accidentally cut your dog when trying to get the mats out. While some double coated dogs can also have long fur, their coat maintenance is not the same as a dog with long fur but only a single coat. Dog breeds that fit this category include breeds such as Yorkshire terriers, havaneses, malteses, shih tzus, and lhasa apsos.

If your clippers get caught up on tangled fur, it will cause your dog a great deal of pain. “Use clippers with a guard, and clip in the direction of the coat,” Dr. Wigfall said. If your dog won’t stay still or seems to be getting anxious, stop grooming and finish another time. “You may find that you have to do the grooming in stages, and this is OK if it keeps everyone safe,” Dr. Wigfall said. For dogs with curly hair, brush in the opposite direction of the hair growth to make it poofier and easier to see the length.

If your dog is nervous or anxious, pairing the sound and feel of the clippers with a high reward treat can be a great way to reassure your dog. The last thing your dog wants is to go through life with his hair a mess. The grooming tools can be frightening to him, which can make it even harder to groom. But if you let his hair go too long between groomings, you may end up with no choice but to either cut his hair really short or shave him (which is a big no-no with long-haired dogs. If you are working with your dog on an elevated surface, make sure they cannot jump off and hurt themselves, and never leave them unattended. You have probably already tried using clippers at home and discovered that there is more to the art of clipping than at first expected. So, shave a line down your pet's back and then choose a side to complete first, and begin working on that. Instead, go in small increments, and trim the same area several times, as needed, until you get to the desired hair length. If you haven't already, you can also take care of your dog's nails and cut or trim them. Some clippers are cordless, meaning they will run on batteries and you'll need to recharge them. And if your dog doesn’t like having scissors near his face, then leave that to your groomer so no one gets hurt.

But, taking your dog to the groomer can be expensive, and learning how to cut your dog’s hair with clippers is a valuable skill that can save you both time and money. To prevent accidental cuts or injuries, make sure your dog is calm and still before starting the grooming process. Always use a blade guard on your clippers, and be mindful of any loose skin or folds that could get caught in the blades. If you do accidentally cut your dog, clean the wound and apply pressure until bleeding stops. As we’ve mentioned, using clippers to cut your dog’s hair can be a cost-effective and time-saving alternative to regular grooming appointments. However, it’s important to understand the proper technique to ensure you achieve the desired result and prevent any accidental harm to your furry friend.

Cutting Your Dog’s Hair at Home – Steps

At clipperreview.com, we understand the importance of keeping your dog looking and feeling their best, and we hope this guide has been helpful to you. With practice and patience, you can become a pro at cutting your dog’s hair with clippers, and enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done. When using scissors, make sure to use a sharp pair and go slowly to avoid accidentally cutting your dog’s skin. It’s also a good idea to hold the hair between your fingers and cut slowly and carefully to achieve the desired look. Different areas of your dog’s body require different techniques for cutting. For example, when trimming your dog’s face, use a smaller blade and take extra care to avoid their eyes, nose, and mouth.

Dog Grooming Clippers

When clipping the hair, make sure to keep the blade flat against the body. If the blade is tilted so that the cutting edge meets skin, you may accidently cause a cut or irritation. Use the shortest of the guide combs over your blade if it makes you nervous to use the clipper blade on these delicate areas.

For this article, we consulted Claudine Sievert, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas. She has specialized in pet care for more than 6 years, treating hundreds of cats and dogs. Unless you’re shopping for only one specific dog, chances are you’ll want clippers with multiple speeds because single-speed clippers generally only work well on smaller dogs with finer fur. Instead look for multiple motor speeds so you can trip thin and thicker, coarser fur. The corded clippers come with six guides along with a cleaning brush, but it doesn't have as many accessories, like a carrying case, as others that made our list.

Even if you do end up thinking you only need one speed, make sure the clippers get to the right speed for your dog’s fur. “For bigger dogs and ones with thick fur, you'll need a higher speed to get through their hair,” explains Sievert. Some clippers are lighter than others, which makes them more comfortable to hold and maneuver, especially when you’re working in sensitive areas.

Tips for Achieving a Professional-Looking Cut

First you need to make sure the dog’s hair is nice and clean and of course you want to have the right tools which we will discuss. Perhaps equally important is having the right amount of space to do the job without getting hair everywhere. This site is not intended to replace individualized veterinary consult. For health-related questions, always consult your veterinarian, as they can make the best recommendations for your pet. While shaving your dog’s fur in the summer may seem like a good idea, it can actually make them more susceptible to sunburn and skin issues.

Let your pup sniff them, and for clippers, turn them on around your dog to let him hear the sound. And if you do, it’s super important to know how to safely give your pup a haircut so you don’t accidentally hurt him (or yourself). Ultimately, the right type depends on what you’re using your clippers for. “If you have just your personal dog that you will be clipping occasionally, the D-style clippers are for you! According to Schaefer, the type of clipper you buy will depend on what you’re planning to use it for, since the various styles of clippers are typically used for different purposes.

Home Pet Grooming 101: A Cheat Sheet for When You Can’t Get to a Grooming Salon

If your dog has sensitive skin, be extra cautious when cutting their hair. Use gentle products and techniques to avoid irritation or discomfort. If you're completely new to at-home pet grooming, I recommend seeking advice and guidance from a professional groomer before you begin or watch them at the salon.

If you’re unsure of how to cut your dog’s hair, don’t be afraid to seek out professional help. Many groomers offer grooming services for a reasonable price, and they can help you achieve the look you desire for your pup. Additionally, there are plenty of online resources and tutorials available to help guide you through the grooming process. First and foremost, it’s important to invest in the proper tools for grooming your dog at home.

Use a dematting brush or comb to gently work out any knots or tangles, starting at the ends of the hair and working your way up. If the matting is severe, it may be necessary to trim the hair with scissors before using clippers. Before you begin using clippers, it’s crucial to understand the direction of your dog’s coat growth. This will ensure that you’re trimming in the right direction, which will help achieve a more even and natural-looking cut. To determine the direction of the coat, run your hand over your dog’s fur in different areas, and watch how the fur moves and lays. In other words, from the head toward the tail and from shoulders and hips toward the toes.

Before you cut your dog’s hair, make sure you know what you’re doing and that you have the right tools so you don’t injure yourself or your pup. If so, there’s a good chance he will require a regular routine of hair clipping. Even if your dog’s coat isn’t all that long, it still might be advantageous to have a haircut for far more than aesthetic reasons. Clipping a matted coat is a skill best left to someone with experience, because the possibility of injuring your dog increases dramatically. The dogs that need regular haircuts include breeds that have long hair, such as Poodles, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, as well as sporting breeds, such as spaniels. Using a clipper to give the dog a haircut keeps them tidy and reduces the chances of long hair becoming tangled.

It’s important to choose the right blade length for your dog’s coat type and the desired style. If you know the right way to cut your dog’s hair safely and the proper tools to use, you can trim your pup’s hair in between trips to the groomer. Just be sure to ask your vet or groomer to give you some tips, and follow the steps above. After using the clippers, you can use grooming scissors to cut hair around any sensitive areas, like your dog’s head. Rounded-tip scissors are useful for trimming around your pup’s face because the round edge is safer. In total, we tested 18 different dog clippers with real dogs in real homes.

They can also tell you some of the common grooming issues that may pop up with your breed and what to be looking for. I know that it seems like you should shave against the hair growth, but this will cause unsightly lines that you won't be able to get rid of. 30 laundry room ideas for snug and sizeable spaces

design laundry room

Instead of a boring basin, consider making your sink a focal point of the room, like Kelly Scanlon Designs has done here. The gold hardware and playful wallpaper help this area feel extra special. Spice up your space by opting for playful flooring instead of the expected. Here, designer Karen Harautunein of Hub of the House Studio chose a black and brown terrazzo that paired perfectly with the black cabinetry and geometric wallpaper.

Hang a Couple Pretty Pendant Lights

With just a little effort, your laundry room can look as lovely—and feel as cozy—as any other room in your home. And while a design refresh might not make folding your linens any easier, it can certainly make your time spent in your laundry room more pleasant. For cleaning supplies, linens or miscellaneous storage you don't use on the daily, mount shelves just below the ceiling. To ensure these spacious floating shelves double as decor, LH Interiors adds a number of decorative bins. When working with small laundry room spaces, it's important to leverage the square footage as best as you can. In this design, two simple open shelves above the sink provide more room for necessities and a touch of decor.

Take a Risk on a Bold Backsplash

Open shelving can help a narrow space feel less compact and more open, even if it's technically taking up the same amount of space as enclosed cabinets. Of course, it also serves as an excellent organizational solution. You can see that effect in this narrow laundry room by Urbanology Designs. A laundry-sorting system will help keep your laundry organized, which can save you lots of time in the long run.

Hanging Station

Keep things airy and bright with open-shelving to make a functional yet attractive display of sustainable small storage solutions, like glass storage jars for washing powders and woven baskets for folded linens. And for a final touch that helps define the space, frame white goods with contrasting cabinets. Spin your laundry space into a sophisticated haven with designer-inspired touches.

Mudrooms and laundry rooms go hand in hand, so why not tie them into the same space? It minimizes clutter throughout the rest of your home, keeps dirtied garments and shoes out of your living spaces, and streamlines the laundering process. Incorporate similar details in both—like Meredith Owens does with the color blue here—for a more cohesive look.

Create hanging space for air drying and ironed clothes

If you don't own a full laundry room and instead have a laundry closet, you can still make this space feel beautiful. Here, Paquin's laundry room design dazzles with a fun silver backsplash paired with crisp white cabinetry and a chrome rod. Incorporate storage solutions wherever possible in order to maximize your laundry room's functionality. Here, designer Kristen Elizabeth added both upper and lower wall cabinetry, a clothing rod, and countertops.

Save space and improve the function of your laundry room by adding a handful of wall-mounted drying racks, as pictured in this design by Kathryn Murphy Interiors. Many laundry rooms come equipped with a basic utility sink, which may be functional but isn't very pretty. For a deep and wide washing situation that still looks great, consider a farm sink as pictured in this Collected Interiors design. The goal of your laundry room is to create a space that feels cohesive with the rest of your home. If your aesthetic tends to lean into saturated and moody colors, take your inspiration from this laundry room design by Brad Ramsey Interiors.

Make sure you store bleach and other dangerous compounds up high enough so young children can't reach them. See-through accessories will also make the room appear bigger and airier. You could go one step further and buy eco-friendly detergent loose from a bulk store. You'll be making an eco-friendly choice, save on all that recycling and reduce your carbon footprint. In addition to serving as former senior editor at StyleCaster and staff writer at Self, her work has appeared in Cosmopolitan, Byrdie, Verywell, SheKnows, Nylon, and more.

Add Coastal Style

But color-coordinating them can make a big impact, especially in a small space, like a laundry room. Keep your countertops neat and tidy by storing your laundry room must-haves on a tray. This approach is particularly helpful if you’re low on counter space. But even if you aren’t, it can be nice to have all your supplies organized and at the ready in a designated spot. Art may not be the first thing you think to put in a laundry room. But the surprising addition can brighten up your space, making it feel as thoughtfully decorated as the rest of your home.

With large windows and a surge of a natural light, it'd be criminal not to maximize this spacious room designed by Elizabeth Drake. To maximize storage in the laundry room, build floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. Then take note from designer Emily Henderson and install a rolling ladder to ensure everything stays within reach. Think modern cabinet colors, creative decorating ideas, trendy wall looks and genius storage solutions.

Cabinets painted in Farrow & Ball Oval Room Blue add a soothing touch to this laundry room that Clara Jung of Banner Day Interiors designed. The Berkeley, California, designer adorned the walls with Zia’s Moroccan zellige tile in Casablanca. This modern traditional setup is a beautiful example of a laundry room that has organically evolved. The floral and French laundry baskets add a classic feel, while painting a wooden table is super easy to DIY, if you know how to paint furniture. Your backsplash doesn’t have to match anything else in the room. But by color-coordinating it with your laundry room cabinets, you can create a striking wall of color that’s sure to turn heads.

The apartment laundry room should be near main traffic patterns and not in secluded, remote areas that pose security problems. Though the best size for a laundry room is thought by design professionals to be around 10ft square minimum, this is just a guide. If you feel you can carve out a practical space, even beneath the stairs to the next story up, you will benefit from having a dedicated space. The latest smart washing machines can be controlled via an app on your phone for added convenience.

If two washer/dryer sets are equivalent—but one’s a little sleeker—invest in the set you’d rather see in your space. Plants make an easy addition to any space, so treat your laundry room to a few. The pops of greenery are sure to brighten up your space, whether you line your shelves with them, hang them from your ceiling, or place a couple by your sink. You wouldn’t think twice about hanging bold lighting in your dining room, your kitchen, or even your bathroom. The simple addition of a striking pendant light can transform your laundry room without you having to do anything else.

Blythe Interiors settles on a style that resembles an industrial pipe to pair with the dark gray machinery and matte black cabinet hardware. A quick way to create a cohesive-looking laundry room is to match your walls to your floors. However a neutral color and/or minimal pattern works best for this approach, otherwise you risk overwhelming the space. Not only do windows and doors provide lots of light in a laundry room, but it also provides the ability to enjoy outdoor views while you do your work. Consider placing one above the sink and countertops—like in this design by Meredith Owens. Lighting is essential throughout your home but is particularly important in a work zone like the laundry room.

Provide lighting that lets you see inside the washer and dryer to make sure nothing is left inside. If you choose a location near living or sleeping areas, shop for appliances with extra insulation and improved suspension that promise quiet operation and reduced vibration. If the dryer doesn't list a decibel (dB) rating, it's probably too noisy to place near the bedroom or kitchen.

The robust material should hold up to the wear and tear of laundry day. And since bricks tend to come in rich, earthy colors, they should add a welcome dose of warmth to your space. Laundry room floors are often covered with tiles, and while those tiles can be incredibly pretty, they can also get really cold. So make laundry day a little cozier by softening your floors with a rug. Take advantage of the opportunity to add a pop of color or print to your space.

Another common type of home found in this region is the Arts and Crafts bungalow, which first became prominent in the early 20th century. These homes are smaller in size and carry over many of the aesthetics of Craftsman homes, only on a more stripped-down scale. These houses often feature offset porches, simple front lawns, and a single story that spreads out the rooms to maximize space.

The common characteristic of this style includes simple, clean lines with large windows devoid of decorative trim. America's Best House Plans features an exciting collection of square footage ranges within the Modern House Plan category. From a tiny 378 square feet to a sprawling, nearly 9,000 square foot plan, with an average range of 2,200 square feet of living space. There is some overlap with contemporary house plans with our modern house plan collection featuring those plans that push the envelope in a visually forward-thinking way.

What's the difference between modern and contemporary design?

Blue siding is gaining popularity, and pops of bright color in the shutters can also play well with neutral colors, which will never go out of style. McGinley Sparks also says she’s seeing more homeowners choose green for their homes’ exteriors. “I was in my late teens when I first came across John Lautner’s work in a coffee table book and it completely fascinated me,” Rønning says. “We intentionally didn’t do lighting hanging over the island or over the kitchen table.

Inspired by the Western Wall in Jerusalem, this 5,200-square-foot oceanside home displays the same peachy greige stone, brought together with natural timber. This large modern home design in Lucknow city was broken into smaller fragments to integrate modestly into its tightly packed neighborhood. The decorative screens that shade the interior are based on traditional ‘chikan’ embroidery. Rolling views of pristine lawns and a lush green grove bestow a peaceful essence on this three-floor deluxe villa, near Lake Geneva. The 2,000-square-meter home includes eight bedrooms, a theater, and a wellness area with a hammam and gym. The irregularities of the site include a large tunnel that penetrates Mt. Eba.

However, it's essential to differentiate between "modern" and "contemporary" in the context of architecture. While "modern" refers to a specific architectural movement with defined stylistic features, "contemporary" refers to homes built in the present day, which can showcase a variety of architectural styles. In other words, all modern homes are contemporary (as they were at the time of their construction), but not all contemporary homes are modern. Modern house floor plans can be significant with expansive floor plans and still be considered minimalist in their design approach, or smaller homes offering more compact floor plans and bold, luxuriously appointed spaces. A unique home with a fun space-age look, which was inspired by the futuristic architecture of the late 1950s.

A black pitched roof smartly crowns the structure, while a rectangular swimming pool dominates the outdoor living space. The large floor-to-ceiling windows and open floor plan allow natural light to pour into this house. Because there is such little ornamentation in modern architecture, the actual shape of the building is what makes it feel unique, cutting edge, and beautiful. Modern design comes from a designated time period that includes the early to the mid-20th century.

This quirky design promotes a connection with the environment, by dissolving boundaries between interior living spaces and a welcoming garden. A gabled profile, floor-to-ceiling windows, and wood paneling give this home a distinct Californian mid-century modern vibe, reminiscent of an Eichler home. The glazed walls seamlessly link the living room and master bedroom to a family-focused patio area. Trends may come and go, but fiber cement siding withstands the test of time.

Borrowing from naturally occurring colors and shapes in the earth, this wood home is sleek and timeless. This house started its life as a humble stone workers’ cottage in the early 1900s. But— as this renovation by San Antonio firm Lake | Flato proves—new and old can live side by side. A modern extension holds the kitchen and bedrooms, but our favorite part is the party-ready courtyard, which features a pool, pergola, and downtown views. “Giving something another chapter just makes it even more special,” architect Vicki Yuan says. In the United States, as of July 2023, the average cost to build a new home can range anywhere from $150+ to $500+ per square foot.

It was as conspicuous as it was forbidding, visible from the couple’s house on nearby Hillside Avenue. “This lot was in pure view—every morning, every night,” Carlotta Stahl recalled. Locals called it Pecker Point, presumably because it was a prime makeout venue.

The accessible residence won House of the Year 2022 at the British Homes Awards. With a base of exposed concrete and a steel-clad upper, this Brazilian home builds a bold presence. Tall hedgerows shield the 42-square-meter residence and its manicured gardens from the street. This Singaporean home has a huge pre-war rain tree in its landscaped garden. The home is focused on the tree’s presence, which is observed through glazed walls that fully retract and offer a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. The sleek lighting and coffee table ensure a minimalist vibe while the plush sectional and throws ensure a comfortable and welcoming environment.

55 Laundry Room Ideas That'll Make Doing Laundry a Joy

design laundry room

If you find yourself drawn to kitschy wallpaper, bold floor tiles, and striking marble countertops, treat yourself to all three. After all, you don’t want to end up with someone else’s version of a perfect laundry room—you want to end up with yours. If you tend to prefer a moodier palette, let your laundry room in on the fun. Paint your cabinets a deep color, snag a set of black appliances, and line your backsplash with dark tiles. If the wall behind your laundry room sink could use a quick tune-up, invest in some striking tiles and paint your cabinets to complement them. Merge style and function for a modern laundry room that makes a timeless statement.

Install Multiple Sinks for Washing

For this laundry room located off the kitchen, it was important to craft a cohesive style. Alexander Scott, lead project designer for Nugent Design Build, used different flooring to create separation, but painted cabinetry and walls in the same shade for better flow. Your cabinetry should stand out rather than blend in, especially if you’re going to be spending a lot of time doing laundry.

Add Backsplash to Your Laundry Closet

Consider tapping into a sophisticated feminine aesthetic for your laundry room design. Instead, take your cue from Maestri Studio by choosing a pinkish beige and white color palette, then temper it with touches of black. A muted, large-scale floral wallpaper brings ties everything together. Instead of trying to bedazzle them, we’d recommend hiding them entirely, like in this room by interior design firms JAM and FIG. In a perfect world, you won’t be able to tell the washer and dryer are there at all. Most homes won’t have a ton of space for a dedicated laundry room, but you can still make a cozy corner feel timeless and chic.

Leverage Nearby Space for More Storage

These nearly black cabinets beautifully contrast the white walls and bright white machines tucked under the light countertop. Hearken back to simpler times by playing with retro colors and patterns, as pictured in Victoria Holly Interiors' laundry room design here. The muted sage green paired with a vertical striped wallpaper creates a welcoming, cozy space that just feels right. Detergent tubs and packaging are notoriously loud and busy, which can detract from the serenity of your space.

Keep things clean with white

Make laundry day more comfortable by adding a seat to your décor scheme. (In fact, you can save space with a stool that slides right under your countertops.) Just make sure it’s cozy enough to keep you comfortable during afternoons spent folding laundry. Especially if your kitchen is all neutral, consider deep, moody cabinetry in the laundry room.

Keep It Clean With a Streamlined Palette

To do this, incorporate a mix of drawers, cupboards, and open shelves to store laundry essentials at all levels, maximizing functionality whilst making the same look seamless. The Harbor Small Sideboard by Dunelm is the an idyllic place to store clothes, and reinforces the nautical theme without going overboard with cheese. The Louvre doors had that beach hut/cabin vibe, while also adding an ayr of rustic charm with distressed edge detail.

You could incorporate a small laundry space in a powder room, closet or even an en-suite bathroom. We also like the tall shelves that draw the eye upwards, while making use of vertical space. If you have a favorite decorating style or an affinity for a certain animal, the laundry room is the perfect space to experiment. Here, designer Elizabeth Drake goes for a chicken patterned wallpaper and bright red cabinetry, then layers in farm-inspired decor.

Folding laundry can be tiring and time-consuming, so why not take a seat on a nearby stool as you work? In addition to plenty of cabinet space for laundry room essentials, designer Maggie Griffin reserves two built-in areas to tuck away small stools. As you pull damp clothes from the washer, quickly air-dry clothes on a convenient clothes rack.

Restore order in your laundry space with baskets and storage with labels. Stackable baskets with in-built, wipe-clean labels look really neat in any space, big or small; plus, they will make a daily laundry room sweep far easier if you know which compartment to add items to. Turn basic into beautiful with a hardworking floor and wall tiles to give your laundry space a creative update.

Doing laundry isn’t the most fun task in the world, so why not make it a bit more exuberant by adding a splash of color to your walls or cabinets? Purple Cherry Architects added a bright shade of blue to this space, creating a vibe that feels warmer and less workaday. From clever layout and storage such as built-in cabinetry or DIY floating shelves to good lighting, there are plenty of small laundry room ideas to optimize both space and style. Whichever layout you choose, it's easier to do laundry if the room makes you happy when you're in it.

Avoid wrinkles and allow clothing to air-dry with out-of-the-way hanging rods. Check out these modestly proportioned, user-friendly spaces that will help inspire you to make the most of your small laundry room. Drawn to homes because of their importance in the happiness of our lives and the enjoyment they can bring, Amelia has been writing about the topic for more than fifteen years. She has interviewed some of the most influential designers of our time, from Piero Lissoni, Antonio Citterio, Jaime Hayon and Arik Levy to Nina Campbell and Robert Kime.

Make loading, unloading, and switching laundry over much easier by keeping your units at arm level. Here, interior designer Ami McKay of PURE Design opted for custom shelving with storage above, below, and beside. You can get double the amount of laundry done at a time with two sets of washers and dryers.

Whimsical wallpaper will instantly remove any lingering sense of a sterile-feeling laundry room. Andi Morse went with a soft blue and gray design here, which she tied into the cabinets and sink. This space by Chandos Interiors is a welcome antidote, with an open window and a breezy, blue-and-white color palette. “Rooms with a utilitarian nature can always use a little whimsy, and it makes doing laundry a little more enjoyable! This interior by Melinda K Design blends dark hues with natural wood for a palette that feels decidedly midcentury modern. White walls and greenery bring a sense of lightness to the space.

When Karim was tired of working for someone else, his passion for food drove him into the restaurant business. He picked up a few cooking fundamentals from his late wife, who Karim says “was the number one chef that I ever met,” and the rest he taught himself from watching YouTube. He’d watch five to six different chefs — either Indians, Pakistanis, or Bangladeshis — make their own renditions of a given dish and then use those learnings to create his own version. Today, he’s most proud of his Hyderabadi lamb biryani, which is Biriyani Kabob House’s top-selling dish. Karim won’t divulge what makes his interpretation so fluffy and perfectly balanced, with its savory, aromatic notes and tender, fatty lamb.
